Sellafield Ltd – a pioneer for the UK’s nuclear industry – is looking for a Director of Stakeholder Engagement & Communications to help them do just that.

The purpose of the role is to use stakeholder engagement, communications and policy understanding to position Sellafield Ltd as world leaders in delivering their purpose of creating a clean and safe environment for future generations.

The role brings together key areas of stakeholder engagement and communications into an integrated whole, supporting the overall strategic objectives of the company.

The successful candidate will understand and shape the relationship between stakeholder strategy and Sellafield’s enterprise strategy, playing a lead role advancing both through building influential, positive and mutually beneficial relationships with all external stakeholders based on true understanding and confidence in what Sellafield Ltd is delivering.

Reporting directly to the CEO, the successful candidate will lead the 40-strong internal and external communications team to build confidence and influence principal stakeholders, including national and local government/councils, regulators, Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, as well as supporting and encouraging the wider engagement of 11,000 employees.

The successful candidate will be required in the Sellafield Cumbria, or Risley office 2-3 days per week.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Set out the vision and ambition, aligned to the company’s purpose and enterprise strategy, for engagement with stakeholders
  • Deliver cost effective and efficient business processes and organisational structure to facilitate optimum performance of the stakeholder relations directorate and the company
  • Develop a long term internal and external engagement stakeholder and policy communications strategy that supports and delivers impact in support of delivering the key business objectives
  • Enhance reputation by effective strategic communications, crisis and operational communications whilst working in partnership with the HR team, improve employee communication and engagement to help unlock the potential of employees
  • Identify, prioritise and influence stakeholders to support strategic objectives and deliver mutually beneficial outcomes

Key Requirements:  

  • An enthusiastic senior leader with a track record of achievement in the fields of stakeholder engagement and strategic communications
  • Someone with experience of working with highly regulated, complex organisations with multiple external and internal stakeholders
  • Highly developed communication/relationship building skills and leadership qualities and experience developing strategic communications programmes in a fast moving and political environment
  • Up to date knowledge of the public sector communications policy context
  • Significant experience of engaging a mixed plant and office-based workforce to deliver motivation, productivity and change
