Hanson Search Internship Experience: Oliver Geddes, Research Intern

The following article was written by Oliver Geddes, who recently completed a 6-week internship program at Hanson Search.

I started at Hanson Search on Tuesday the 6th of June 2022 and my time here has honestly flown by. Interning with the firm has been an incredibly rewarding and valuable experience. Working within a team of expert recruitment consultants for a little over a month has allowed me to develop a range of commercial skills that I believe will serve me extremely well as I embark on the next stages of my career. Seeing the fast-paced nature of the recruitment industry day in and day out has made for a fascinating 6 weeks – it gave me unprecedented insight into the general operation of businesses on the client side and taught me the importance of consistent and coherent communication on the candidate side. Overall, Hanson Search has provided me with a variety of foundational skills upon which I will be able to build a successful commercial career.

Something I particularly enjoyed about my time with Hanson was the company culture. Every member of the team was approachable from my very first day. Whether I was talking to a seasoned headhunter or a researcher who had recently joined, my questions felt heard and valued. I felt that the friendliness of the team genuinely boosted office morale and productivity. Quick chats about football or laughs about something funny that had happened over the weekend created a warm work environment which allowed me and the rest of the team to do the best work we possibly could.

Another aspect of my internship that I really appreciated was the quality of work I was doing. Every assignment I completed had a visible impact on the rest of the organisation and seeing that every day was massively encouraging. I believe that was a result of the quality of work Hanson itself does – the firm offers a bespoke service to its clients that is very difficult to match. The firm recognises that every client is different and thus the service it offers must be tailored to the client’s individual needs. This detail-oriented approach was challenging at times as there were occasions when I wasn’t necessarily sure if the research I was doing was entirely relevant to the task at hand. However, I was able to overcome these challenges with the help of the rest of the team. As a result, I developed and improved several key competencies, including attention to detail, analytical skills and problem solving, all of which I know will serve me very well in the future.

My internship with Hanson Search is something I am extremely grateful for. In today’s increasingly competitive job market, internships are a fantastic way for students to get their foot in the door and I’m very happy I was able to do one with such a great company. I’d advise all students to actively look for internships, even if they’re not necessarily in the sector you wish to work in once you graduate, you’ll be able to develop transferrable skills and start building an impressive CV. To any future interns that find themselves at Hanson, I’m certain you’ll enjoy your experience. In the way of advice, I’d say come to work with a positive attitude and a willingness to learn – a good sense of humour also goes a long way! Your internships will fly by so make the most of them in every way you can but above all, be yourself and try to have fun.
